Confidence and self-esteem are aspects about our character or self-worth that can be damaged. Lowered self-esteem and confidence could be caused by depression, past abuse (verbal, physical, sexual, neglect), or any life events which could be tied to your personal self-worth (examples: job losses, divorce, financial troubles). What begins as a negative attitude eventually develops into negative beliefs about oneself. Some people with low confidence and self-esteem don’t feel like they deserve certain things in life or relationships. This negative perspective can affect every aspect of your life, since self-worth affects the way you think of yourself and others.
Negative self-esteem can be seen much like depression, in the example of wearing the wrong prescription glasses. Everything you see looks blurry, or maybe just what is up close (yourself). Therapy can help you to see yourself in a more positive and realistic view, opening up room for joy, possibilities and satisfaction in life.
